Forest Stewardship Council accreditation

Principal Doorsets Logo fanning doors in grey green

Principal Doorsets is proud of its achievements in obtaining and maintaining the FSC standard. we want to play our part in ensuring sustainable supply chain so we do not apply an additional charge for product sourced under FSC standards.

Being FSC certified shows that we comply with the highest social and environmental standards on the market. As public concerns about the state of the world’s forests and timber resources increases, FSC provides us with a credible solution to complex environmental and social issues.

FSC certification is an effective way to get public and consumer recognition of our responsible practices. It gives us credibility with our customers and business partners as well as financial institutions and watchdog organisations. FSC certification helps to protect both our and our customers brand and reputation and it allows us to access highly environmentally sensitive markets. Increasingly, governments and others specify FSC certified products in their procurement programs.

Certification System

FSC runs a global forest certification system with two key components:

  1. Forest Management and
  2. Chain of Custody certification.

This system allows consumers to identify, purchase and use timber and forest products produced from well-managed forests.

Principal Doorsets is audited by Exova BM Trada.

Historically, a significant proportion of the timber imported into the United Kingdom has been illegally harvested, an activity that causes deforestation, environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity. Illegal harvesting is also associated with corruption and organised crime and has an impact on the standard of living of many of the world’s poor who depend on forests for their living.

The company will, therefore, only purchase, either directly or as part of a sub-contract package, timber or timber based products from a supplier or manufacturer who can clearly show that they are fully compliant with the requirements of the European Timber Regulations No 995/2010 (EUTR) and can confirm that the timber or timber based products they are supplying to PDL are not from areas where the following criteria apply;

  • Violation of traditional and human rights in forestry operations
  • Destruction of high conservation values in forest operations
  • Significant conversion of forests to plantations or non-forest use
  • Introduction of genetically modified organisms in forestry operations.
  • Violation of any of the ILO Core Conventions, as defined in the ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, 1998.

The company will not source any timber species prohibited under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

We shall ensure where possible, that timber or timber based product has a chain of custody certificate from a credible, independent certification scheme, such as those run by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI), the Canadian Standard Agency (CSA) & the Malaysian Timber Council Scheme (MTCS endorsed by PEFC).

The senior management team will ensure that all their staff, product designers, subcontractors, and suppliers are made aware of this policy.

If as a result of this policy, Principal Doorsets is unable to procure timber or a timber based product specified by a client, designer or architect, we will advise them of the issues and request that the appropriate change be made to the specification. This may include proposing an alternative species, fit for purpose, which has the appropriate certification.

We are delighted to have achieved our latest audit results from Exova BM Trada against the FSC-CoC standard. We work hard to maintain the standard and are passionate about the objectives of the Forest Stewardship Council. No non conformances and no improvements raised for a second year.  - Director
