The Wonford Mother and Baby Unit in Exeter was transformed with the opening of Jasmine Lodge, a new £8 million purpose-built facility delivered as part of NHS England’s initiative to address the national shortage of specialist perinatal mental health beds. Replacing a temporary four-bed unit, the new centre doubled capacity to eight beds, enabling mothers from Devon, Cornwall, and Somerset to receive care locally alongside their babies. Designed to provide a therapeutic, non-institutional environment, Jasmine Lodge won the 2019 Building Better Healthcare Award for Best Interior Design (New Build). The facility includes eight en-suite bedrooms with courtyard access, family apartments for overnight stays, specialist clinical and communal areas, and space for the Perinatal Community Outreach Team to support smoother transitions to home care.
