National Apprenticeship Week 07 February 2022

As one of the UK’s premier door manufacturers, we are proud of our skilled and diverse workforce. Here at Principal Doorsets we value learning and professional career development as a key priority. This National Apprenticeship Week (7-13 Feb) we are celebrating our apprentices by giving them the opportunity to explain why they chose an apprenticeship and the benefits of going down this career route.

Aaron joined us straight from school and through the skills and experience he gained on his apprenticeship he has progressed into his current role as Project Co-ordinator. “My apprenticeship was key to my development,’ he explains. “Learning on the job with 1:1 support from my mentor gave me so many opportunities to relate my studies to the practical skills I was doing every day. I have been able to move all around the factory, learning and gaining knowledge of many aspects of the business. This knowledge has enabled me to progress within the business. In my opinion, an apprenticeship is the best way to learn.”

The word apprentice is often associated with just school leavers or entry level work, but this is not always the case. Wendy was a Head Teacher of a school before she joined us two and half years ago. Wendy and George are now working towards a Level 5 diploma in business management.

“After 25 years in education I wanted a change,’ says Wendy. “I’ve always enjoyed studying and whilst this has been a learning curve, working alongside people who have knowledge and experience has been great. The management team have been so supportive and given me the opportunities to learn naturally by putting me in situations where I can apply the skills I am learning; this experience is so valuable. It is challenging to study and learn whilst juggling family life, but with effort and applying yourself it’s doable.”

George joined us at Principal Doorsets as a lead project coordinator 5 years ago. After completing his apprenticeship as a site carpenter worked in a large scale door manufacturer in North Devon. He values the skills and experience gained whilst training on the job. “For me a practical way of learning is much better as I was able to practise my skills and learn quickly,’ says George. “I have progressed more than my friends who went on to university or straight into jobs and I have no debts. Earning whilst learning is a real benefit of being an apprentice” he concludes.
